We know that in the first centuries following the Resurrection of the Lord, the Church suffered savage persecution, with many Christians being killed for their faith in the Lord Christ. The Eucharist, out of necessity, was celebrated in secrecy and in honor of the martyrs. It became the norm to celebrate the Eucharist on their graves. When the persecution ended, the custom continued. When Christianity spread, the practice of placing the relics of martyrs became the norm
