Midwest Diocese Remembers Beloved Hierarch on One Year Anniversary

CHICAGO, IL [DOM] – April 24 marks the anniversary of the falling asleep of His Eminence Archbishop Paul (Gassios) just one year ago. Archbishop Paul, the eleventh hierarch of the Diocese of the Midwest, reposed after a short battle with a rare brain cancer on the saving day of the Resurrection of the Lord, 2022.

As previously announced, His Eminence Archbishop Daniel called for a day of prayerful observance remembering the late Archbishop Paul. In addition to the services around the diocese, Archbishop Daniel led the Divine Liturgy at the Diocesan Cathedral, Holy Trinity Cathedral, Chicago, IL. His Eminence was joined by Archpriest Paul Jannakos, Chancellor, Priest Alexander Koranda, Cathedral Dean, Priest Jacob Van Sickle, Priest John Kennerk, Priest Nikolai Lochmatow, Priest Anthony Saunders, Protodeacon Thomas Keith and Deacon Paul Garklavs. The Choir was directed by Ms. Olga Garklavs.

The Litany of Departed was taken during the Divine Liturgy and a memorial service was held at the end of liturgy. Following the memorial service, Archbishop Daniel offered few words reflecting on his predecessor, and Fr. Paul also offered a few words in memory of the late Archbishop. A festive meal was held in the hall.

The Michigan Deanery gathered in the cemetery of Holy Dormition Monastery in Rives Junction, MI, for a memorial at the gravesite of Archbishop Paul. Services were led by Archpriest Dusan Koprivica, Dean of Michigan, and clergy from the surrounding area. The headstone was also blessed during this time.

May Archbishop Paul’s memory be eternal.
