CHICAGO, IL [DOM] – The Diocesan Feast of the Wonderworking Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God was celebrated by His Eminence Archbishop Daniel of Chicago and the Midwest on June 25 and June 26 at the Diocesan Cathedral, Holy Trinity Cathedral, Chicago, IL.
The feast began with the celebration of the All Night Vigil on the Thursday evening. The Archbishop was joined by clergy from the Chicago Deanery. The Chicago Deanery Male Choir sang the responses under the direction of Reader Philip Sokolov.
On Friday, June 26, at the invitation of Archbishop Daniel, the Hierarchical Liturgy was presided over by His Grace Bishop Spyridon of Chicago adn Mid-America (ROCOR). Serving with the hierarchs were Archpriest Herman Kincaid, Chancellor, Priest Alexander Koranda, Cathedral Dean, Mitered Archpriest Vladimir Kovalchuk, Priest Nikolai Lochmatow, Priest Jacob VanSickle, Priest John Kennerk, Priest Anthony Saunders, Protodeacon Alexander Kichakov, Deacon Paul Garklavs, and Deacon Timothy Heinbokel. The choir was directed by Reader Vladimir Lymar.
Following the Divine Liturgy, a prayer to the Mother of God was read.
The Archbishop welcomed Bishop Spyridon and expressed his gratitude to all who came to keep this important feast.
Following the Divine Liturgy, a reception was held in the Cathedral Courtyard.

Today the Church, and especially the Church gathered today in prayer throughout the Diocese of the Midwest, celebrates the historic appearance of the wonderworking Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God. This icon is truly a sacred image through which countless believers have experienced the protection, comfort, and intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos. This has been true throughout the centuries and remains true in our own day.
The feast is not merely a commemoration of an ancient icon. It is a reminder that God continually works in human history through those who have given themselves completely to Him. The Mother of God points us not to herself, but always to her Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.
When people have come before the Tikhvin Icon through the centuries, they have brought their fears, illnesses, family troubles, and national crises. They sought help because they believed that the Mother of God hears the prayers of her children. Their trust reflects the words spoken by Mary, Mother of Jesus at Cana: “Do whatever He tells you.” Her role is always to lead us to obedience, faith, and deeper communion with Christ.
The history of the Tikhvin Icon also teaches perseverance. Through wars, invasions, displacement, and suffering, the faithful preserved this holy image as a sign that God’s mercy remains present even in difficult times. The icon became a witness that no earthly power can extinguish faith when it is rooted in the heart.
Mary herself is an icon of endurance, of fidelity, and of perseverance. Her love endured and continues to endure. HER LOVE ENDSURES Some ways in which Mary, the most pure Mother of God and OUR Mother demonstrates PERSEVERANCE include:
- Accepting God’s call: When the angel announced that she would give birth to Jesus, Mary accepted a difficult and uncertain mission despite the potential social consequences (Luke 1:26–38).
- Facing hardship and uncertainty: Mary endured the journey to Bethlehem, gave birth in humble circumstances, and later fled to Egypt with Joseph and the infant Jesus to escape danger.
- Living with concern for her son: Throughout Jesus’ life and ministry, Mary experienced uncertainty, misunderstanding, and anxiety as she witnessed the challenges he faced.
- Remaining at the Cross: One of the strongest examples of Mary’s endurance is her presence at Jesus’ crucifixion. Rather than fleeing, she remained near him during his suffering, enduring profound grief while staying faithful.
- Persevering in faith after loss: Following Jesus’ death, Mary continued with the disciples, maintaining hope and faith in God’s promises.
- The Virgin Mary exemplifies endurance through her unwavering faith amid trials, suffering, and uncertainty. From accepting God’s call to standing at the foot of the Cross, she remained faithful and hopeful, trusting God even in moments of profound sorrow.
In our own age, indeed, in our own experience, many people face anxiety, loneliness, and uncertainty. We may not face the same dangers as previous generations, but we carry burdens of our own. Within our hearts. In our families. In our relationships. At work or in school. Wherever we live and with whomever we interact, we find sources of concern, and fear, and anxiety. The feast invites us to place these burdens before Christ with the confidence of children approaching a loving mother. The Mother of God does not remove us from every trial, but she helps us endure them with faith, hope, and courage.
An icon is often called a “window into heaven.” When we venerate the holy icons we are reminded that heaven is not far away. The saints are part of our lives. The give us an example by their lives and witness to holiness. They pray for us. When we honor and venerate the Tikhvin icon, he Mother of God intercedes for us. Christ is with us. We are never abandoned.
Therefore, on this feast day, let us ask the Most Holy Theotokos to strengthen our faith, protect our families, guide our communities, and help us remain steadfast in following her Son. May we learn from her humility, her obedience, and her unwavering trust in God.
Rejoice, O Protectress of the Diocese of the Midwest, sheltering our parishes beneath thy radiant omophorion. Rejoice, O Mother of God of Chicago and Tikhvin, who strengthens our clergy and faithful in every good work. Rejoice, O heavenly guardian of our families, leading the young to Christ thy Son. Rejoice, O blessed Theotokos, who preserves our Diocese in unity, peace, and steadfast Orthodox faith. Rejoice, O Queen and Protectress, who ceaselessly prays before thy Son for our salvation.
Through the prayers of the Mother of God, Our Lady of Tikhvin, may Christ our God grant us peace, salvation, and abundant mercy. Amen.
