DIVINE LITURGY OF ST. BASIL THE GREAT

BEATITUDES TROPARIA on 8, Tone 1: All Resurrection.

In Thy kingdom remember us, O Lord, * when Thou comest in Thy kingdom.
Blessed are the poor in spirit, * for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, * for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, * for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, * for they shall be filled.

8. Blessed are the merciful, * for they shall obtain mercy.

Through food, the enemy led Adam out of Paradise; / and through the Cross Christ led the thief back into it crying: // ‘Remember me, O Lord, when Thou comest in Thy Kingdom.’

7. Blessed are the pure in heart, * for they shall see God.

I venerate Thy sufferings and glorify Thy Resurrection. / With Adam and with the thief I raise a shining cry to Thee: // Remember me, O Lord, when Thou comest in Thy Kingdom.

6. Blessed are the peacemakers, * for they shall be called the sons of God.

Without sin, hast Thou been crucified, and of Thine own will hast Thou been laid in the tomb. / But Thou as God hast risen raising Adam with Thyself, crying: // ‘Remember me, when Thou comest in Thy Kingdom.’

5. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, * for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

On the third day, O Christ our God, Thou hast raised from the tomb the temple of Thy body / raising with Thyself Adam and those descending from him, crying: // ‘Remember me when Thou comest in Thy Kingdom.’

4. Blessed are you, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, * and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

The women bearing myrrh came early in the morning lamenting to Thy tomb, O Christ our God, / and they found there an angel in shining white seated and crying: // ‘What do ye seek? Christ is risen, weep no more.’

3. Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad, * for great is your reward in heaven.

O Lord, Thine apostles as Thou hast ordered them were beside Thee on the Mountain / and seeing Thee, O Savior, they worshiped // and Thou has sent them forth to teach and to baptize the nations.

2. Glory to the Father, * and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Let us worship the Father and glorify the Son / and let us all sing too the praises of the all-holy Spirit saying: // O most holy Trinity save us all.

1. Now and ever, * and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Thy people, O Christ, offer Thee as prayer Thy Mother. / By Her supplications, give us Thy mercies // that we may glorify Thee Who art good, and Who hast risen to us from the tomb.

TROPARIA & KONTAKIA

Troparion, Resurrection, Tone 1: When the stone had been sealed by the Jews; / while the soldiers were guarding Thy Most Pure Body; / Thou didst rise on the third day, O Savior, / granting life to the world. / The powers of heaven therefore cried to Thee, O Giver of Life: / Glory to Thy Resurrection O Christ! / Glory to Thy kingdom! // Glory to Thy Dispensation, O Thou Who lovest mankind.

[Troparion, Church (if of the Theotokos or Saint(s))]

Troparion, Ven. Mary of Egypt, Tone 8: The image of God was truly preserved in thee, O Mother, / for thou hast taken up the Cross and followed Christ. / By so doing, thou hast taught us to disregard the flesh, for it passes away; / but to care instead for the soul, since it is immortal. // Therefore thy spirit, O holy Mother Mary, rejoices with the angels.

Kontakion, Resurrection, Tone 1: As God, Thou didst rise from the tomb in glory, / raising the world with Thyself. / Human nature praises Thee as God, for death has vanished. / Adam exults, O Master! / Eve rejoices, for she is freed from bondage, and cries to Thee: // Thou art the Giver of Resurrection to all, O Christ!

[Kontakion, Church (Saint(s))]

Glory…

Kontakion, Ven. Mary of Egypt, Tone 3: Having been a sinful woman, / thou hast become through repentance a bride of Christ. / Having attained angelic life, / thou hast defeated demons with the weapon of the Cross; // Therefore, O most glorious Mary, thou art a Bride of the Kingdom!

Now and ever…

[Kontakion, Church (if of the Theotokos). If not, then:]

Kontakion, Theotokos, Tone 6: Steadfast protectress of Christians, / constant advocate before the Creator; / despise not the cries of us sinners, / but in thy goodness come speedily to help us who call on thee in faith. / Hasten to hear our petition and to intercede for us, O Theotokos, // for thou dost always protect those who honor thee!

[(321-ctr) Hebrews 9:11-14] Brethren: When Christ appeared as a High Priest of the good things to come, then through the greater and more perfect tabernacle (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) * He entered once for all into the Holy Place, through not the blood of goats and calves but His own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. * For if the sprinkling of defiled persons with the blood of goats and bulls and with the ashes of a heifer sanctifies for the purification of the flesh, * how much more shall the blood of Christ, Who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, purify your conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

[(208) Galatians 3:23-29] Brethren: Before faith came, we were confined under the law, kept under restraint until faith should be revealed. * So that the law was our custodian until Christ came, that we might be justified by faith. * But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a custodian; * for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. * For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. * There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. * And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.

GOSPELS

[(47) Mark 10:32-45] At that time, taking the twelve, Jesus began to tell them what was to happen to Him, * saying, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn Him to death, and deliver Him to the Gentiles; * and they will mock Him, and spit upon Him, and scourge Him, and kill Him; and after three days He will rise.” * And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to Him, and said to Him, “Teacher, we want Thee to do for us whatever we ask of Thee.” * And He said to them, “What do ye want Me to do for you?” * And they said to Him, “Grant us to sit, one at Thy right hand and one at Thy left, in Thy glory.” * But Jesus said to them, “Ye do not know what ye are asking. Are ye able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” * And they said to Him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink ye will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, ye will be baptized; * but to sit at My right hand or at My left is not Mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” * And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. * And Jesus called them to Him and said to them, “Ye know that those who are supposed to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. * But it shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant, * and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. * For the Son of Man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”

[(33) Luke 7:36-50] At that time, one of the Pharisees asked Jesus to eat with him, and He went into the Pharisee’s house, and took His place at table. * And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that He was at table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, * and standing behind Him at His feet, weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head, and kissed His feet, and anointed them with the ointment. * Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw it, he said to himself, “If this Man were a prophet, He would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner.” * And Jesus answering said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to thee.” And he answered, “What is it, Teacher?” * “A certain creditor had two debtors; one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. * When they could not pay, he forgave them both. Now which of them will love him more?” * Simon answered, “The one, I suppose, to whom he forgave more.” And He said to him, “Thou hast judged rightly.” * Then turning toward the woman He said to Simon, “Seest thou this woman? I entered thy house, thou gavest me no water for My feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. * Thou gavest Me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss My feet. * Thou didst not anoint My head with oil, but she has anointed My feet with ointment. * Therefore I tell thee, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little.” * And He said to her, “Thy sins are forgiven.” * Then those who were at table with Him began to say among themselves, “Who is this, Who even forgives sins?” * And He said to the woman, “Thy faith has saved thee; go in peace.”

INSTEAD OF “IT IS TRULY MEET…”, Tone 8:

All of creation / rejoices in thee, O Full of Grace, / the assembly of angels / and the race of man. / O sanctified temple / and spiritual paradise, / the glory of virgins, / from whom God was incarnate / and became a child / our God before the ages. / He made thy body into a throne, / and thy womb He made more spacious than the heavens. / All of creation / rejoices in thee, O Full of Grace. // Glory to thee!

COMMUNION VERSES

Praise the Lord from the heavens! Praise Him in the highest!
The righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance. He shall not fear evil tidings.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

The Troparia on the Beatitudes are from the translation of Mother Mary (The Sunday Octoechos). Scriptures are according to the approved Revised Standard Version. Rubrics follow the 2020 Liturgical Rubrics & Calendar published by St. Tikhon’s Monastery Press. Prepared with the assistance of Reader Teodor Zajler.

Since there are no variables for Lazarus Saturday through Pascha, I make them available here: <http://philipsokolov.com/choir-cues/> Although for most services I provide only a selection, such as an Epistle, since all of the texts are probably readily available. With this, then, I sign off now and wish you a blessed Holy Week and Pascha!
