51st Diocesan Assembly reviews recent events, calls for move to proportionate giving
BROADVIEW HEIGHTS, OH [MW Diocese Communications] — His Eminence, Archbishop Nikon of Boston, New England and the Albanian Archdiocese presided at the 51st Assembly of the Diocese of the Midwest was held at Archangel Michael Church here Monday, November 12, 2012.
 
While minutes of the assembly will be posted shortly, highlights of the Assembly include the following.

  • Archpriest John Zdinak, Diocesan Chancellor, welcomed the 120-plus delegates, offered updated information on recent diocesan happenings, and introduced various issues to be considered during the assembly.
  • Archpriest John Jillions, Chancellor of the Orthodox Church in America, offered an assessment of concerns surrounding His Grace, Bishop Matthias, fielding questions and comments from the floor.  He reviewed decisions of the Holy Synod of Bishops, detailed in their recent letter.  The Holy Synod’s letter, as well as the letter of Bishop Matthias, may be accessed here and here.  No actions were taken by the delegates, nor called for.
  • A resolution calling upon the Diocesan Council to develop a proposal and process for moving toward proportionate giving instead of the current per capita assessment as a means of financial support was passed unanimously, with the hope that action in this regard will be forthcoming at and implemented after the 2014 Assembly.
  • Delegates approved the 2013 diocesan budget.
