Pan-Orthodox youth folk festival, rally to be held in Chicago area March 9

ELMHURST, IL [MW Diocese Communications] — Youth representing Orthodox Christian parishes throughout the Chicago area will be gathering at Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 893 Church Road, Elmhurst, IL on Saturday, March 9, 2013 for the first folk jam sponsored by the Orthodox Christian Coalition for Healthy Youth [OCCHY].

“OCCHY’s ‘Folk Jam for Healthy Youth,’ designed to promote the prevention of drug and substance use/abuse, is open to teens from all Chicago area Orthodox communities,” said Gordana Trbuhovich, OCCHY Project Coordinator.  “Through the event, OCCHY will strive to bring together all Orthodox Christian youth for a better understanding of a common threat which faces them all.  Focusing on prevention, we hope to instill an awareness of the dangers of substance use/abuse while enjoying the familiar cultural atmosphere of their heritage.”

Special resources also will be available for parents and teachers.

The day’s activities, which will begin at 4:00 p.m. and conclude at 9:00 p.m., are not limited to ethnic folk groups.

“In addition to performances by parish folk dancers, singers and musicians, we encourage teens to organize cheerleading teams for audience shout-out,” Ms. Trbuhovich added.  “OCCHY will provide ideas and information to groups creating their own cheers.”
