Chicago faithful to participate in Little Village Peace Walk July 25
CHICAGO, IL [MW Diocese Communications] — Members of Christ the Savior Church here will participate in a Peace Walk in Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood on Friday, July 25, 2014.
“They will join community organizations and neighborhood residents in Little Village to promote peace at a time when rates of violence in the Chicago are high,” says Kathryn Bocanegra. “A similar peace walk took place the Friday before Memorial Day weekend and there were no shootings in Little Village that weekend.”
Participants will gather at Saint Agnes Catholic Church, 2651 South Central Park, Chicago at IL 60623 at 6:00 p.m. The walk will open with a poem read by a community mother who lost a child to violence. The expected 150 participants will walk from the church to Farragut High School, 2300 S. Christiana. On the way, they will pause at four blocks on which there have been shootings/homicides. At each stop, a prayer will be led by a local priest, a poem read by a community resident, and a song led by youth.
The march will conclude at 7:00 p.m. with closing comments by Eddie Bocanegra and snacks and family games.
WTTW will be at the event to share a message of hope with the city. Several youth and families who have come to Christ the Savior will be a part of this event as well.
“This is a safe, family-oriented event,” adds Ms. Bocanegra. “Bring your icons for the march!”
