In Memoriam: Priest Michael Prevas
CHICAGO, IL [MW Diocese Communications] — Priest Michael D. Prevas, 66, fell asleep in the Lord on Saturday, June 16, 2018 after months of battling cancer and related complications.
Father Michael was born to Mary and Emmanuel Prevas in Waterloo, IA on May 27, 1952. As a teanager he and his brother Nick moved with their family to Chicago. He graduated from Saint Joseph High School, Westchester, IL in 1970. In 1974 he graduated from Hellenic College in Brookline, MA. In 1983 he married the former Olga Garklavs. He received a Masters of Divinity degree from Saint Tikhon’s Seminary, South Canaan, PA and was ordained to the priesthood on February 23, 1986 and was assigned to Holy Trinity Church, Catasauqua, PA. Two years later, he was assigned to Saint Peter and Saint Paul Church, Chicago. He subsequently was attached to Holy Trinity Cathedral, Chicago. During the 1990s and early 2000s, he served as a supply priest intermittently at Saint Panteleimon Church, Summit, IL, and at the Orthodox Chapel at Great Lakes Naval Base, North Chicago. Severe rheumatoid arthritis prevented Father Michael from actively serving in church during his later years.
Father Michael is survived by his son, Seraphim; former wife, Olga; brother, Nick [Tina]; niece, Connie [Mario] Meza; and nephew, Priest Michael [Matia] Prevas.
Visitation will begin at Holy Trinity Cathedral, 1121 North Leavitt Street, Chicago at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19. The Funeral Service for a Priest will be celebrated at 6:00 p.m. On Wednesday, June 20, the Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at the cathedral. Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, River Grove, IL. His Grace, Bishop Paul of Chicago and the Midwest will officiate.
